Over-the-Door Organisers You Can Make in a Weekend

When space is limited, over-the-door organisers are a lifesaver for maximising storage. From decluttering your pantry to creating a spot for craft supplies, these organisers are functional, stylish, and—best of all—easy to make yourself. This post will walk you through two simple DIY over-the-door organiser projects you can complete in a weekend.

1. DIY Over-the-Door Pocket Organiser for Small Items

Perfect for shoes, toys, or craft supplies, this pocket organiser can be customised to match your home’s decor.

Materials Needed
  • A sturdy fabric (canvas or denim works well)
  • A sewing machine (or needle and thread)
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Bias tape or ribbon for edging
  • Grommets or metal rings
  • Over-the-door hooks
Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Base Fabric

  • Measure your door’s dimensions to determine how large your organiser should be.
  • Cut a piece of fabric slightly smaller than the door’s width and about two-thirds of its height.

Step 2: Create the Pockets

  • Cut multiple rectangular pieces of fabric for the pockets.
    • Size these based on what you plan to store. For example:
      • Small items: 6 inches wide x 8 inches tall
      • Larger items: 10 inches wide x 12 inches tall

Step 3: Hem the Edges

  • Fold and hem all four edges of each pocket piece to prevent fraying.

Step 4: Attach the Pockets to the Base

  • Lay the pockets on the base fabric to determine the layout. Leave enough space between rows for easy access.
  • Sew the bottom edge of each pocket to the base.
  • Sew the sides of the pocket, leaving the top open.
  • Add pleats or darts to create more space within each pocket.

Step 5: Add Edging

  • Attach bias tape or ribbon around the edge of the base fabric to give it a polished look.

Step 6: Install Grommets or Metal Rings

  • Punch holes at the top corners of the base fabric.
  • Install grommets or attach metal rings to reinforce these holes.

Step 7: Hang Your Organiser

  • Use over-the-door hooks to hang the organiser securely on your door.

Customisation Tip: Paint or appliqué designs onto the pockets to personalise your organiser.

2. DIY Over-the-Door Organiser with Baskets

Ideal for pantries, bathrooms, or bedrooms, this organiser uses wire baskets to store bulkier items like towels, toiletries, or pantry staples.

Materials Needed
  • 3–4 small wire baskets
  • A sturdy wooden board or MDF panel (cut to fit your door)
  • Drill and screws
  • Over-the-door hooks
  • Paint or stain (optional, for finishing the wood)
  • Cable ties or wire clips
Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Wood Panel

  • Measure your door to determine the size of the board. It should be slightly smaller than the door width and long enough to fit 3–4 baskets vertically.
  • Sand the board to smooth out any rough edges. Paint or stain it for a polished look, if desired.

Step 2: Attach the Over-the-Door Hooks

  • Secure hooks to the top of the board. These will allow you to hang the panel over the door.

Step 3: Arrange the Baskets

  • Lay the baskets on the board to decide the placement. Leave enough space between them for easy access.

Step 4: Secure the Baskets

  • Drill small holes through the wooden board at the points where the baskets will attach.
  • Use screws or cable ties to secure the baskets to the board. Make sure they are tightly fastened to hold the weight of your items.

Step 5: Hang the Organiser

  • Place the panel over your door using the hooks. Adjust its position for a snug fit.

Step 6: Load It Up

  • Fill the baskets with items like snacks, toiletries, or towels.

Pro Tip: For added functionality, label each basket with small chalkboard tags or adhesive labels.

Benefits of DIY Over-the-Door Organisers

  • Cost-Effective: DIY options are often cheaper than store-bought versions.
  • Customisable: Tailor the size, colour, and design to fit your space perfectly.
  • Eco-Friendly: Repurpose materials like old fabrics, baskets, or boards to create your organiser.
  • Weekend-Friendly: These projects are simple enough to complete in just a couple of days.

Both of these over-the-door organisers are excellent ways to utilise vertical space and declutter your home. With just a few materials and a little creativity, you can craft functional and stylish storage solutions tailored to your needs. Whether you opt for pockets or baskets, your weekend DIY efforts will pay off in a more organised and efficient home.
